Recuerdos

by

 Melissa A. Calderón

In Recuerdos, I explore the creation a transnational "fantasy heritage".  Using installation, photography, sculpture and video, I examine stereotypical imagery within the context of American assimilative process of Latinidad.  The work addresses the discourse of the construction of a hybrid identity from the 2nd generation Latino perspective.  While exploring the ideas of cultural alienation and rememory, Recuerdos brings a new context to emotional embeddedness of Latino culture.

Interdisciplinary artist and curator Melissa A. Calderón presents a unique and indelible mark to the revitalization of alternative art in the Bronx.  Born and raised in the Bronx, Melissa founded the Mott Haven loft series CONVERSIONs and has co-founded organizations such as Haven Art Space and Coalition of Mott Haven Artists.  Melissa recently exhibited her work at El Museo del Barrio and Instituto Cervantes.  She currently is working on her own emerging artist studio, Waxing Creative, and is Program Coordinator at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.
